9/6 Introduced Native American Culture. Watched part of "30 Days: Life on a Native American Reservation" to better understand the modern plight of Native Americans.
9/9 Students read "Railroads Open the West" and "Government Support for Settlement" and discussed the impact of the transcontinental railroad and defined the Homestead Act.
9/10 Students worked on the "Farmer's chart" that depicted the problems homesteaders faced out west and the solutions they created to overcome those problems. Pgs. 139-143 were used in the textbook to complete the chart. We then went over the chart as a class.
9/11-12 We reviewed Homesteaders and discussed the various aspects of their culture. Introduced Native American Culture and took Native American notes. Discussed the uses of buffalo parts.
9/13 We began viewing Episode 1 of "Into the West" and the students must write a paragraph character summary for each character: Jacob Wheeler, Loved by the Buffalo, and Thunder Heart Woman. Students will submit their notes to google classroom at the end of the episode.
9/16 We continued viewing Episode 1 of "Into the West".
9/17 Students read about conflicts and Reservation Life on pg. 118. Students viewed the three videos above summarizing and explaining the outcome.
9/18-19 Reviewed Native American/White conflict. Began watching Episode 5 of "Into the West". Took notes over Native American Assimilation.
9/20 Continued Viewing Episode 5 of "Into the West"
9/23 We finished viewing Episode 5 of "Into the West".
Read pg. 123 about Wounded Knee and the Ghost Dance.
9/24 Viewed Episode 6 of "Into the West".
9/25-26 Read pg. 123 about Wounded Knee. Finished viewing Episode 6 of "Into the West".
9/27 Read "Cowboy Facts Sheet". Students worked on an Internet scavenger hunt over the National Cowboy Museum.
9/30 Began taking Cowboy Culture notes. Explained the Cowboy Song Assignment (Must include 8 vocab terms from the notes, Must also have 3 verses and 1 chorus for a total of 16 lines) Cowboys songs are due Thursday, October 3rd.
10/1 Students worked on creating their cowboy songs. The songs are due Thursday, October 3rd.
10/2 Students continued working on their cowboy songs. They will present next class period.
10/3 We presented the Cowboy songs (20 points).
10/7 Introduced the Westward Expansion Board Game Project. With a partner, students will create a board game show the interactions between the 3 cultures covered during Westward Expansion and addressing 5 categories for each of the 3 cultures. The project is due Fri. October 11th. The project scoring guide and an instructional video is posted above.
10/8 Students worked on their Westward Expansion Board Game, due October 11th.
10/9-10 This is the final class period students got to work on their Westward Expansion Board Game, due next class period.
10/11 Students presented their game boards by choosing another group to challenge and play each other's games. Their projects were assessed while they were playing the games.
